Portugal - Planet Earth Day 1 / 2022

PLANET EARTH DAY 1 – 16th November 2022

On 16th November, in Agrupamento de Escolas de Pegões, Canha e Santo Isidro, we celebrated our first Planet Earth Day, developing awareness-raising actions to educate about plastic pollution.

We carried out different activities:

- Plastic weighing accumulated over 1 week: we got 16,88 kg of plastic. We have a long job ahead since our goal is to reduce this weight by, at least, 50%.

- We invited an expert to hold an awareness-raising talk on waste sorting and recycling. The lecture was targeted at teaching and non-teaching staff.

- We started a vertical herb garden by reusing plastic bottles.

- Students created audio advertising spots in Portuguese and English languages to raise awareness to the necessity of deplastifying the planet.  The spots will be broadcast on the school radio, on the school library blog, Facebook pages of Eco-schools and Erasmus+ “Deplastify the Planet”.

- 5th and 6th grade students played the giant game “Sustainability Mission”, temporarily provided by an environmental organization (Arrábida Energy and Environmental Agency).

- Students created posters on tips to reduce plastic that were displayed at the school entrance. They also carried out some research on environmental organizations.

- We inaugurated the “Garden of Kindness”.  Besides planting a tree and flowers, we placed a wooden message board and painted pebbles with messages of kindness. Let's be kind to ourselves and to the planet.

 Small actions like these can make a big difference. One student at a time, we’ll change the world.
